The Best Kept Secret

The Mackenzie Room is where
Rustic meets Refined.

This Railtown restaurant, helmed by Andrew Jameson, opened in 2015 and is the first property in his restaurant group - Collective Hospitality.

About Collective Hospitality

Over the spring/summer of 2015, we came together to do something we’d never done: build a restaurant from scratch. We found a space that needed a lot of love and learned as we went. Having been built with our own hands, it’s infused with a lot of passion and care. That year The Mackenzie Room was born.

As our team grew, so did the desire to explore other dining experiences with different cuisines.

2020 brought us Say Mercy! - a marriage of Chef Sean Reeve’s love for Southern cooking and his Italian training. Eight weeks into opening our second restaurant the pandemic hit, and we had to close all our restaurants.

But instead of putting up the chairs - we got to work.

We started cooking STAFF MEAL, a city wide program that offered access to wholesome, delicious food while simultaneously infusing the Vancouver Food Bank with donations. We cooked for our community, and in turn we were given the greatest gift - we learned that showing up when things were hard and putting community first was the truest form of hospitality.

When dining began to come back, we re-focused our efforts on putting the community first. We lobbied the city to close the road next to Say Mercy to envision a place for our neighbourhood to enjoy. We built B-Side Patio, the cutest little surf + sandwich shop, to provide a safe outdoor space for our neighbours to gather. We set up a pop-up Christmas Market in response to families feeling like they were missing outdoor activities for with kids (and lot and lots of egg nog).

With each new pivot, we found ourselves reconnecting to the roots of this industry. In 2021, our Bistro & Grocer Collective Goods, was developed out of this discovery.

We sought out to build a space that harkened back to a time when the general store in town was a staple of the community. We got lucky and found a place in the cutest, most ‘well-kept secret’ neighbourhood of the city. Chef Sean found new excitement in creating take home meals, and curating grocery goods to help teach guests how to bring the restaurant experience a little close to their kitchen table. And our bistro is a place to re-connect over great food and drinks with friends and we all slowly find our way back to something that feels familiar.

Careers at Collective Hospitality

We believe in long lasting friendships and look at running our business the same way. We are inspired daily by those who work alongside us, and know that we are stronger when linked together. We look for individuals who are curious and driven to learn (experience is less important than a desire to grow). We want to hire people who are interested in an environment of team building, who are kind and respectful, and who are laser-focused on the guest experience.

Executive Chef - Sean Reeve

The restaurant is steered by Chef Sean's cuisine. His culinary roots are firmly planted in the techniques of the old world and interpreted through a modern voice that brings a beautiful balance to his cuisine.

Manager - Kaylund Mons

From Vancouver Island, Kaylund brings his eye for detail and friendly warmth to both our restaurant and your table. He lives and breathes hospitality - before working with our group he managed Agrius in Victoria, and shared his expertise at both Dockside and Bauhause here in Vancouver. Look out for Kaylund around town, if he’s not managing at TMR he’ll be eating & drinking at some of his favourite spots in the city.

Chef de Cuisne - Josh Stel

Chef Josh is a hometown boy, born and raised in BC. His love for the outdoors, and his curiosity about the world, guides his creation. With a background in French training, he loves the simplicity with which a dish can be created, and finding ways to bring out the delicate flavours that sharpen your focus with surprise and delight. His days off are spent listening to loud music, drinking Miller Lite, and getting outdoors.
